Staying warm and cozy this winter with Russell HVAC

Stay Warm This Winter!

By Published On: December 20, 2023

Winter often brings the unwelcome surprise of soaring electric or gas bills, especially when your furnace has been working overtime. Unlike the warmer months when you can simply turn off the air conditioning to save costs, the chilly winter doesn’t afford the same luxury. However, there are several strategies you can employ to help reduce energy expenses while keeping your home warm. Consider the following tips:

  1. Install a Programmable Thermostat: Investing in a programmable thermostat (option) allows you to preset temperatures for different times of the day. You can lower the heat when no one is at home or during the night. This simple adjustment can result in savings ranging from 10% to 20% on your energy bill. Consider these recommended temperature settings for optimal comfort and energy efficiency:
    • 6 am to 9 am = 68 degrees
    • 9 am to 5:30 pm = 60 degrees
    • 5:30 pm to 11 pm = 68 degrees
    • 11 pm to 6 am = 60 degrees
  2. Fireplace Use: While a crackling fire may seem cozy, it can actually lead to significant heat loss. A large, open fire can expel over 20,000 cubic feet of heated air per hour. When using your fireplace, remember to close the flue afterward to prevent warm air from escaping through the chimney.
  3. Reverse the Spin of Ceiling Fans: In winter, reverse the direction of your ceiling fans to clockwise. This helps circulate warm air that naturally rises, redistributing it throughout the room. This simple adjustment can enhance the overall efficiency of your heating system.
  4. Use Your Drapes Wisely: Leverage natural solar heat by keeping drapes open when the sun is shining. As evening approaches, close your curtains to create an additional layer of insulation around windows, preventing heat from escaping.
  5. Lower the Thermostat: Consider lowering your thermostat by a few degrees. A modest adjustment, such as going from 72 degrees to 68 degrees, might not be immediately noticeable in terms of comfort, but it can translate into significant savings of up to 12% on your monthly energy bill.

Taking these steps can make a noticeable difference in your winter energy costs. If you’re in Cherokee County, Georgia, and want to ensure your furnace is in top shape before holiday gatherings, give us a call for a tune-up!
