Is It Time to Replace Your HVAC System?

An HVAC system is a big investment in your home. However, it is needed for the comfortability of your family. If you notice any of these signs, it may be time to consider replacing your HCAV system.

AC System Is More Than 10 Years Old

If your air conditioner is over ten years old, it might be time for a new one. The Department of Energy recommends replacing HVAC systems every 10-15 years. When your system hits the ten-year mark, you might see many of the components in the unit having issues. Most units older than ten years old are likely to use R-22 refrigerant. This freon is not only bad for the environment but also outdated and hard to find. Upgrading to a newer unit will reduce your carbon footprint while cutting down on your monthly energy bills.

Repair Costs Outweigh Half the Price of a New HVAC System

This is probably obvious, but it’s a biggie. Why spend money on repairs that are costing almost as much as a new system? When you notice that this is the case, it’s time for a new HVAC system. The biggest upside to buying a brand new system is the warranty that comes along with it. Most new HVAC units will come with a warranty.

Your Energy Bills Keep Increasing

Seasonal changes to your energy costs will happen throughout the year. However, bills in the same month of different years should be relatively similar. A common sign you should replace or service your HVAC system is an unusual spike in energy costs that are not consistent from years past. As heating and cooling systems age, their efficiency declines. This can be problematic for those that do not have their systems serviced at least once or twice a year.

You Can’t Keep Your Home at a Comfortable Temperature

If you don’t notice an increase in your energy costs, then you may notice that you are struggling to keep your home at comfortable temperatures. This may cause you to turn the thermostat up (or down), which would cause a higher energy bill. If this is the case, then it may be time to replace your HVAC unit. When the unit ages it naturally slows down. Much like anything else that ages.

Odd Sounds

A well-maintained HVAC system should operate quietly. As the HVAC unit ages, you might notice noises such as grinding. If these devices are making any unusual sounds, then you should have the system inspected immediately. Consider replacement if the repair cost outweigh the costs of a brand new system.
